Are You Really Focused?
A professor I once had in management school said that “We all find time to do the things we want to do.” So doing the things necessary to grow your business isn’t necessarily a function of time – but about focus. And your ability to focus regulates not only the speed at which you grow, but whether you grow at all.
As the leader of your organization, where you go, they go. Think of it in terms of rail cars linked to the engine of a train. If you decide to wander off the main track to explore your organization follows, one by one or department by department, because of how you’re connected.
Sure, you’re done with the diversion and back onto the path trying to get up to speed but the rest of your caravan is still following the track you took on this diversion. You may be back on the path, but the 10th car following you is still crossing that ditch you left weeks ago slowing you down.
In our excitement to go there we tell everyone to follow – to come explore. But then forget to tell them never mind when either losing interest or deciding it wasn’t the right detour.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s OK to explore, just remember to communicate on the tail end when it’s over. Otherwise you’ll have multiple cars all on different tracks and wonder what happened to your momentum.

This is a great post! I have been guilty of this detouring. Then I get back on track, and think it's kind of obvious. This is a timely reminder for me, to appreciate that I am the only person in my head, and that I have to communicate everything — even the obvious. Thanks again!
