Warren Buffet, wanting to purchase a corporate jet for the first time, asked a CEO friend how he justified the expense to his company. His friend replied “I can’t justify it, but I can rationalize it.”

That got me thinking about one of the most rationalized decisions in business – why we keep mediocre or substandard talent in our organizations.

“But they’ve been here for a long time” or “They know the customers” or my all time favorite – “I’ll get to it later, there are other priorities right now.”

If your number one priority isn’t to surround yourself with A Players, to have the best watching your back, then you may need to check your priorities.

Mediocrity is like the flu…it’s contagious. Just as success breeds success, mediocrity breeds low or slow growth, loss of profits and sloppy performance. All it takes is one to affect the performance of your team as the mediocre never raise their game to an A level, but always drag your A Players down.

Remember that next time you miss a deadline by a day or come in under goal. You will have met the enemy and it is you…
