“You have to shut up; keep your head down, do the right things and you’ll eventually get recognized.” 

Holy Seth Godin! 

I was sitting in my favorite booth at the local breakfast spot and almost choked on my coffee when hearing those words this morning come from the mouth of a ‘Suit’ sitting next to me.  

He was earnestly coaching a younger ‘Suit’ on how to survive and get ahead within their organization. For this blogger, the conversation was waaay too good to be true and I almost broke my neck eavesdropping. 

Aside from that initial bit of wisdom the guru in the next booth imparted the following insights…I took the license of assigning the business categories they pertained to: 

Culture – “It’s a battle of good versus evil…after all; we’re all just numbers on a piece of paper…binary bits of information…so you have to be on the right radar.” 

Leadership – “You can’t be a General AND a Prophet.” 

Management – “John is a good guy once you look past his hair…gotta get past the hair thing.” 

Mentoring – “Gotta get on the old guy’s calendar and suck the info out of his brain, only then can you take him out.” 

Process – “Sam’s great at wordsmithing these f’ing forms – he’s a master…learn from him.”

Teamwork – “He’ll hand you the ball and then tackle you right before the goal line and run it in himself…gotta watch him.” 

People Development – “Clarence is great at people development…just don’t expect him to get hand’s on.” 

Getting Promoted – “My perception is based on little information – but you gotta get on the list…HR leaders only go by the list.” 

It was then my party arrived diverting my attention away from the fountain of wisdom in the next booth.

And we wonder why Corporate America is so screwed up…
