One of the most important factors determining the level of success you enjoy in the future is the strength of your network.
Meaning, if your network is filled with people who are struggling, value fun over work or just plain clueless, then you’ll probably struggle as well. You may have fun while doing it, but it won’t cross many finish lines.
One of the reasons I left banking was the inherent toxicity of the network within it. Most of the people at my work level couldn’t wait to get to ‘happy hour’ and gripe about their boss, their marriage or their job.
I quickly realized that the only way to achieve my goals was to replace those times spent listening to that drivel with time spent with more successful and positive people.
So think about your network…What percentage of your network has achieved the level of success you aspire to?
Is it filled with ‘Drama Queens’ who love to waddle in their problems or people in search of solutions?
Have you heard the same problem three times or more with no progress on correcting it?
Is work something they do in-between parties or is the party a celebration of something they’ve done?
Remember, no matter how strong your psyche, routinely exposing it to intense negativity will take its toll. And we all feel better after a conversation centered on what’s possible rather than what’s not.
