We all grew up knowing the Golden Rule:

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

However, I’ve discovered that in business this well intentioned mindset often bogs down business by causing miscommunications and hurt feelings. Because by and large, the rule doesn’t take into account the feelings or perceptions of the person on the receiving end.

Think about it, if I prefer email and you prefer telephone, a miscommunication will occur unless one of us compromises. Or if I go through my business day not concerned about other people’s feelings because mine are rarely hurt, I’m going to hurt someone’s feelings. At the very least you end up with a needless distraction or full blown drama.

So if you find yourself misunderstood as a leader or want to be more effective in your business relationships, you may want to adopt a new ‘Golden Rule’:

Do unto others as they wish to be done unto.

After all, it’s their world too…
