This week I had the pleasure of speaking at Temple University’s Fox School of Business. The audience was made up of young, budding entrepreneurs; some with huge visions and others more conservative ones. But all looked to the future with that unmistakable can-do attitude of youth.

Hungry for advice, direction and answers they asked my opinion on a number of potential ventures during Q&A. Often my initial reaction was to be skeptical as to their prospects because my experience immediately identified the monumental hurdles awaiting them.

Therefore the toughest thing for me to do when answering was to give them advice they could use going forward without crushing their dreams. And why not tell them they were hurdling towards a brick wall?

Simply because they just might find a way over or through it that I don’t know of.

How many people would have told Michael Dell he was doomed to fail when he began selling computers from his dorm room? Who would have thought John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell would be successful competing with the juggernauts of the day when creating their line of hair care products?

In the end, success is as much a matter of one’s perspective as it is talent and ability. I’m glad to have been reminded of that this week.
